Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDT)

Grand Lake Gateway Community postcard

The Town of Grand Lake is an official "Gateway Community" to the Continental Divide Trail (CDT). This 3,100-mile "thru" trail passes directly through the Town of Grand Lake, making it the ideal place to start to explore the trail with a day hike, or to rest and re-supply during a longer journey.

Towns and counties designated as official CDT Gateway Communities are those that Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDTC) recognizes as friendly to trail users and dedicated to the stewardship of the trail. Gateway Communities strive to give visitors a great experience and work to promote, protect and complete the trail. From the high desert of New Mexico to the snow covered mountains of Montana and everywhere in between, there are 20 CDT Gateway Communities spanning the length of the trail.

The CDT route through Rocky Mountain National Park consists of approximately 30 miles of spectacular scenery. Although it does not travel the actual Divide, it provides breathtaking scenery, including sections of high peaks and fragile alpine tundra at elevations of up to 11,500 feet. Additionally, the North Inlet and East Shore trailheads are all located within one mile of the Town of Grand Lake and also offer easy access to the CDT.
